There are plenty of ants in the tree—Carpenter ant

The Carpenter ant (Camponotus ligniperda) is a real giant among ants. It is the largest ant species in Europe! Although these ants are rather calm, it is better to avoid provoking them. When carpenter ants sense a threat, they tend to aggressively defend their nests by biting their attackers.

Carpenter ants are usually two-toned. Their heads are black and their torso, abdomen and legs are a reddish-brownish color. Queens can reach sizes ranging from 15 to 18, even up to 20 mm long! Whereas, workers ants, range from 3 to 14 mm in size.

Carpenter ants live in forests and open areas covered in shrubs. They build their nests in decaying tree stumps, in weeds under tree roots, as well as in living tree trunks.
